The Fashionista Style and being a Fashionista Muslimah is one way to look elegant and modest whilst still following the latest trends in fashion. It makes you stand-out in a crowd full of Kardashian-esque women, and look good! Elegance can be defined as gracefulness, which is also known as a restrained beauty of style. You read that right, restrained. Doesn’t that remind you fo modesty? Being elegant basically translates to being a refined, modest Muslim woman. This will increase your chances of a suitable, high-value Muslim man finding you since you’re not screaming for attention. Your career and your social status in your community will improve and the only logical response to you is respect! There are different elegant styles a Muslim woman can follow, in this blog, I’ll talk about The Fashionista, and how this style manages to be modest, yet elegant.
Who is the (modest) Fashionista Muslimah?
According to Wikipedia’s Wiktionary, a fashionista is a person who produces and promotes high fashion. Would you like to dress trendy, yet refined and elegant? An elegant fashionista Muslim woman dresses in a very new, exciting way. Basically, clothes that are very on-trend and are a perfect mirror for the times they live in. Being a fashionista means following trends, watching runway shows and often having to acquire a new wardrobe. It’s an expensive style to have, but one thing is for sure, you’ll always look like you care about your looks.
This style often falls prey to fast fashion, meaning that it is harder to invest in timeless pieces because the trend may very well be dead after a year or two. I’d recommend to not buy many fast-fashion pieces, but to analyse the trends you think are worthwhile investing in and buying high-quality pieces of those. Maybe, you can still wear them after the trend has died, or you can sell it!
How to dress like a Modest, Elegant Fashionista Style Muslimah?
Since the Fashionista lives in and for trends, there is not one fit, colour or type of fabric that I can advise you to wear from now on. There is not one thing that will always be on-trend. But I can share the trends of 2021 according to stylists! The overall trend this year seems to be mostly 1980s-style inspired with a hint of 50s and 60s inspired additions. The theme seems to be: bigger, chunkier, oversized and pops of colours and patterns.
Fabrics & Patterns to Wear in 2021
The fabrics for 2021 can roughly be divided into two main themes: lightness and raw surfaces. In addition, two fabrics stood out in the runways: the number of knits and the focus on denim.
Fit to Wear in 2021
Wider and looser cuts are coming back!
Thank Allah for this trend! Relaxed, wider and looser cuts are making a big comeback! Pants with loose, relaxed silhouettes have been popular for several years and tops, blouses and dresses are next in line. Retailers are moving from older, tight-fitting styles to more loose, wide and relaxed fits. Say goodbye to skintight knits and curve-skimming blouses and hello to oversized sweaters, boxy blouses, and flowing dresses!
Say goodbye to your skinny jeans!
The same goes for pants and skirts, so skinny jeans lovers listen up! We are going back to straight-legged, wide and baggy trousers. If you really want to stay on-trend, then hide your skinny jeans somewhere you can’t find them and stick to at least tailored pants if baggy is a big step for you.
Earn some stripes Fashionista Muslimah!
Stripes have never really been gone, but this year they are taking centre stage. The bigger, the better according to the runways! You can do this elegantly, by mostly using neutrals and ‘easy’ stripes. Or go full-on with bold colours and neon accents.
Floaty & Maxi
Colours to stick to in 2021
As always, the options are endless when it comes to colours. This year powder blue, charcoal, and neutrals were all over the runways as well as black and white together especially mixed in patterns. If you’ve seen The Queens Gambit, you might get a sense of were these designers got their inspiration from. But that’s not all! Pastel tones are also very loved. These sorbet-inspired colours are perfect for summer and they look wonderful on any skin tone especially mixed with the floaty maxi dress trend we’re seeing. Earth tones (think rust red, mustard yellow, deep browns & more) were seen on many runways and can almost be seen as the new neutral for this decade, replacing the blacks and grays we’ve seen the past few years.
Some interesting trends for Muslim Fashionista’s this 2021
Statement sleeves
According to personal and fashion stylist, Lana Blanc, statement sleeves are about to have a comeback! Big-shouldered, 1980s-style sleeves and sleeves adorned with oversized ruffles, bell and balloon sleeves, that add visual interest to a blouse, top or dress.
Oversized Shoulderpad Boyfriend Jackets
The 80s-inspired oversized boyfriend blazer is coming back in full force! Shoulder pads add volume to the blazer and the blazer cinches in your waist which elongates your legs. This look is best with either a long, straight leg maxi skirt or a pair of straight-legged trousers. Dress this up with a belt and accessories or down for an effortlessly classy aesthetic.
Head Scarfs
Fashionista Hijabis can really up their hijabi game with this new headscarf trend-inspired by the 50s and the 60s. Invest in headscarves to add a finishing touch to your outfit and level up your hijab look. Silky designs with floral motifs, elaborate patterns, or just a simple addition of a scarf with bold colours! If you’re like me and love to keep your hijab looking natural (mostly neutral colours or black) you don’t have to use the headscarf on top of your hijab, but maybe using it as a scarf around your neck or let it dangle from your bag. You can even just wrap it around your wrist to create an interesting band. Look up Fashionista Muslimah on Pinterest and Tik Tok and you’ll find wonderful examples of this new trend.
Accessories for the Fashionista Muslimah
Shoes
Wide heels and chunky soles are nothing new, we’ve seen them on our sneakers these past years. The trend is about to expand however and move to less casual footwear in 2021. Chunky heels will show up on loafers and dress shoes as well as on heels. These heels are called platforms and have an even rise from back to front, basically platform heels. Comfort is a must this year, mules and slip-ons will stay on trend!
Jewellery Trends 2021
- Extra-long pendant necklace: this will look amazing on top of your hijab or subtly sticking out from under it. Make sure the pendant is dainty if you want to add some femininity and big if you’re looking for something bolder.
Hijab fabrics to use for Fashionista Muslimah 2021
You should wear the hijab fabric that suits your style of hijab as well as what makes you feel and look comfortable. A few fabrics that are great for the modest, fashionista style this year are:
- Jersey Hijab: a stretchable, lightweight fabric which remains in shape without pins. It looks best when it is pulled tight around the face, but it can also be wrapped loosely around the head for a more effortless look.
- Chiffon Hijab: a thin, soft texture scarf that needs an underscarf because it is quite seethrough. You need pins to fix chiffon hijabs in the right place, which means that they don’t slide away. If you love the draping and folding, chances are you will love chiffon.
- Silk: to tie in with the headscarf trend I talked about, I advise you to take a look at small silk scarfs that will look wonderful matched with your jersey, chiffon and pashmina hijabs!

I recommend wearing these hijabs as actual hijabs meaning that they should cover the neck! Turbans are also a possibility for the Fashionista Muslimah. I try to refrain from judging, but I advise strongly to cover the neck and hair. However, you are the one in charge and if your way of hijab is different than mine, then that is perfectly fine! Haute Hijab shared a wonderful guide with different types of hijab styles, so take a look!
Make-up for the Muslimah Fashionista in 2021
- Bold Lips & Peach Lips: Strikingly coloured lipstick will be back in 2021. The most trendy colour is between red and orange: a bit warmer than the real bright red lipstick, which often has a bluish undertone. Perfect beyond a more relaxed make-up. Natural eyes, bold lips! Or go the opposite: peach lips and strong eye make-up
- The Double Cat-Eye: It takes some practice, but the double cat-eye with liquid eyeliner was seen on multiple runways.
- Blue Eyeliner: Striking graphic eyeliner in other colours than black? Blue is the new colour this year! This 90’s trend is back and needless to say, keep the lips a bit more neutral when you go all out on the blue.
- The Eyedot: Simple and easy yet so alluring, a small dot under your eye will elevate your eye look.
- The Eye Contour: Only create the contours of your cat eye with a pencil or eyeliner – and then not fill it in. At first it will feel unfinished but this look can make small eyes look like Bambi’s!
- Glossy Lips & Glossy Eyes: Make both your lips and eyes glossA gloss just for your lips? No, certainly on your eyes! Go for a glowy look, opaque but dewy foundation and apply the gloss on your eyelid. Preferably use a transparent gloss (or for example Eight Hour Cream from Elizabeth Arden!).
Nails
Your hands showcase how well you take care of your appearance. They should be an extension of the look you’re trying to convey. When you wear trendy jewellery like a statement chain link bracelet, you need to make sure your nails fit the picture meaning your nails should be manicured. You can learn how to do your nails at home, or go to a salon. Your nails should be short to medium in length. NEVER have stiletto nails or anything longer than medium. Not only is it haram, but it also is unhygienic. The shape of your nails for 2021 should either be a nice almond shape or tapered square coffin shapes. There are many halal nail polishes on the market nowadays so you can opt for many trendy styles in 2021 such as:
- Abstract Organic Shapes: Look for designs in muted, monochromatic colours, like deep burgundy and nude.
- Brown is the new nude: Shades of brown are the new nudes and neutrals this year, not only in clothing.
